Empowering Future Leaders: A Recap of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day 2016.Connect


“Papi, just so I understand, you do the math to make sure trucks get to their destination?” It can be difficult for a child to understand the role logistics plays in everyday life. In fact, understanding the role of a supply chain professional can be difficult even for some adults. My two kids recently attended Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day at TMC, which not only aided in their understanding of what dad does at work all day, but also fostered dinner table conversations about future careers and how supply chains provide access to products and services needed by people around the world.

On April 28th, TMC hosted its third annual event for the nationally celebrated Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. My son and daughter have attended each year; however, given that they are both firmly entrenched in the pre-teen years (12 and 10, respectively) I fully expected a “Do we have to?” or “That sounds boring!” when I brought up the 2016 event. I had not yet mentioned that they would get to miss part of the school day or that they would get to participate in a supply chain activity featuring LEGO® bricks before they both emphatically proclaimed, “We want to go!” Needless to say, my wife and I were surprised. The act of going to the office, sitting at my desk, participating in a team meeting, and getting ice cream were the highlights of their previous visits. But this year, the kids were interested in seeing the projects and day to day operational issues they hear about at the dinner table on a first hand basis.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day was a total success; the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Surprisingly, I learned a little more about my kids in the process. Seeing them interact in a group setting with kids they were meeting and working with for the first time was interesting. To help the kids understand how a supply chain works, all the children were tasked with building components that represent one – from an assembly line, to the mode of transportation, and finally, the businesses and homes where goods are delivered. For this activity, TMC brought in LEGO®-inspired toys from Play-Well that allowed the kids to exercise their inner-engineering skills as they built working conveyer belts and more.

My son, an avid LEGO® fan, quickly completed his task and started helping those around him. He quickly established himself as the subject matter expert for the activity within his group. He has always exhibited leadership qualities, but seeing him put them to use in what is normally my space was a proud dad moment.

Raising kids while juggling a career can be very demanding. Time is at premium and any opportunity to combine quality time with life lessons is priceless. Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day provided our family with one of those moments. The kids learned about supply chains, and, in the process, we all learned a little more about each other.
