The end of a year provides a natural point of reflection. I think we all take measure of where we’ve been and where we want to go. It has been a while since we’ve written about TMC’s past and future, so I thought I’d take a minute to talk about how and why TMC was founded and what we are excited about going forward.
Our business began in 1999. It was an interesting time. There was a lot of talk about Y2K, the Euro was just being introduced, and technology was booming. And, for those of us in supply chain, we were trying to understand how best to utilize emerging technologies and understand their impact on the management of our business.
It was in this environment of change that TMC was founded. At that time, there was no model available for shippers who wanted to retain control of carrier selection and carrier management while outsourcing the management and operation of their TMS. We decided to create a fee-based solution that provided shippers with a technology platform, expert talent, and quality managed services. And as many of you know, that was one of the best decisions we ever made.
This year, we will reach a major financial milestone—one that in 1999 seemed like a far off goal. With our customers, we are making a real difference. For example, this year we will deliver 187 billion packages of milk, juice, and water, plus more than 1.2 billion containers used to hold medicine. We have handled the delivery of over 4 billion servings of berries and 4 billion vehicle parts.
Access to goods and services is a foundational building block of society, and we’re proud to play a role. I mention this because it is directly aligned with our vision—improve access to the products that the world’s homes, businesses, and communities need—which speaks to both who we aspire to be and what inspires us to come to work each day. It also answers the question, “How can we make a difference in the world?” We’ve accomplished a lot by pursuing this vision, and we are excited to embark on the next steps in our journey.
Speaking of the future, what does it hold? With only two weeks left in the year, it’s time to start looking toward next year and beyond. We plan to continue to fulfill our vision, focus on our mission—to connect, automate, and optimize the world’s supply chains—and create practical value every day.
Our division of C.H. Robinson has grown a lot in 16 years—but we’re just getting started. Thank you to our customers and employees for your continued belief in what TMC does. We’re stronger than ever, and I couldn’t be more excited for our future together.
